Coexistence between dogs and cats is possible
Many of us, when asked if we are more of a dog or cat person, can't answer because we love both. Although dogs and cats have historically been enemies, this is just a myth that today we are going to dismantle from our blog.
First of all, size has nothing to do with the adaptability of our pets. What we do have to take into account is the character of both the feline and the canine to ensure a happy coexistence between them. The ideal in this path would be for them to start living together as puppies, but this is not always possible. By following our advice you can make the expression “ get along like a cat and a dog ” just that and your pets will be happy living together.
The presentation of both animals is a fundamental moment for the future relationship that our pets have. To do this, it is recommended that they be in separate rooms for the first few days , so that they get used to each other's smell.
For the moment of the presentation , the ideal is to put the leash on our dog to gradually bring him closer to the cat and thus be able to control him in case of sudden movements. If you have previously gone for a walk, run and play, this will make you arrive tired and reduce the chances of conflict. Do this several times a day and you will soon see results. If either pet is overly aggressive or anxious, it is best to separate them and wait for another time.
On the other hand, it is important that you separate the food of both animals. It is advisable that the cat's food be in a high place, where the dog cannot access it. When you give the dog food, make sure the cat is in another room. Never allow one to eat the other's food.
Likewise, each one has to have their bed and their space to rest independent of the other. This will reduce territorial struggles.
Don't forget to reward calm behaviors when you start being together through positive reinforcement, either through words, caresses or rewards.
Spend time playing with each one. If the animal considers that the other has not come to “steal from its master” it will be happier and will not compete with the other for your attention.
Have you had experiences living with both animals? We want to know what your case was like and if you have managed to ensure that, although you may not become great friends, you can tolerate each other and live in the same home without problems.
