I have become pregnant. What do I do with my cat?

Categories : Pet tips

This question has been asked by women on countless occasions and today we intend to dismantle the myths around this topic.

We are going to talk about a topic that substantially worries pregnant women or women who are trying to conceive: toxoplasmosis . There is still a belief that, if you have a cat, you should get rid of it if you are pregnant and this is totally false.

First of all, it is advisable to take the test that will determine if you have already had the disease (many times it occurs without symptoms or can be confused with the common cold).

If you have already had it, you are not in any danger during pregnancy. If you have not had the disease, you should check that your cat is healthy by taking it to the vet and take extreme precautions when cleaning the litter box or, better yet, have someone else do it for you.

We must also highlight that domestic cats that are health- controlled by a veterinarian, that do not go outside and whose diet is based on commercial feed , have almost no chance of contracting the disease and, therefore, infecting the pregnant woman.

In fact, most people who get toxoplasmosis do so by eating undercooked meat or vegetables , fruits or vegetables that are not well washed .

Added to this is the fact that separating a pregnant woman from her cat can create a feeling of sadness and anxiety that alters her well-being. It has been shown that women who live with one or more cats on a regular basis receive more benefits than disadvantages by continuing to do so during their pregnancy.

Another issue that you should keep in mind is that cats are quite sensitive to changes in routine and may need time to adapt to the new situation at home. But we are sure that with patience and a lot of pampering , everything will go smoothly.

So at Dibaq we recommend that you do not get rid of your cat without first informing yourself and taking all the necessary precautions.
