The role of assistance dogs in the lives of people with autism

Categories : Pet education

At Dibaq Petcare, on the occasion of World Autism Day, we want to highlight the positive impact that pets, especially assistance dogs, have on the lives of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our collaboration with the DISCAN Association reflects our commitment to improving the quality of life of these individuals through Animal Assisted Intervention programs.

Since 2007, DISCAN has been doing admirable work in educational centers, nursing homes, day centers and hospital units, using assistance dogs to support people with various needs, including those with ASD.

This past month at Iberzoo Propet, DISCAN, together with our dogs Sira and Kiwi, offered a moving demonstration of how dog tethering can be used to prevent children with ASD from taking risks when trying to run away. These dogs are trained to detect and respond to these situations in a way that ensures the child's safety, sitting or lying down to avoid danger.

Safety for children with autistic disorder

This anchoring technique is a clear example of how an assistance dog can be vital for some children with ASD, providing them not only physical security, but also emotional support and a constant sense of company.

At Dibaq Petcare, we are proud to support and collaborate with initiatives such as DISCAN, which not only demonstrate the importance of assistance dogs in the treatment of autism, but also highlight the special bond between humans and animals. This World Autism Day, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive and empathetic world, where pets continue to play an essential role in the well-being of all people, especially those affected by ASD.
