The faithful and loving friends that we know as life companions can also become incredible rescuers, guides, explosive detectors, healers... Authentic heroes who save lives and help human beings with unique dedication and cunning. The so-called working dogs carry out tasks for which they are carefully and rigorously trained. And what better day than today, the Worker's Day, to highlight this important work carried out by some of our furry friends.

But what do you know about them? Although some breeds have been categorized as “working” – Alaskan Malamute, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Border Collie or Doberman – many others are prepared to carry out these tasks. Everything will depend on its aptitudes and physical qualities, which combined with intensive training, will turn the dog into an essential work companion.

It is perhaps the most popular image of a “working dog”, but do you really know the magnitude of the tasks that these magnificent dog agents can perform? They chase criminals, protect agents, sniff out objects in search of people, rescue bodies in natural disasters... Their great physical condition and instinct put them ahead of humans in many tasks that would take hours to complete.

Specifically, in Spain, the dogs that are part of the National Police Corps are trained to carry out the following functions: detection of explosives, detection of drugs, defense and attack, rescue and rescue, detection of fire accelerants, search and location of human remains, detection of legal tender bills and location of hidden people.

And what are its most sought-after qualities? Police dogs must adapt to any environment, have excellent physical shape and a good hunting instinct.

It is one of the most visible tasks of dogs, since they can be seen on the street and other public places on a regular basis. These are dogs specially trained to help people with disabilities, such as the blind. They must be docile dogs, easily trained and very obedient, with an affable and patient attitude. They are also animals used to warn patients with epilepsy or diabetes, and, in other cases, they help in therapy processes with people with various psychological or behavioral problems. The most useful breed in this type of tasks are the Golden Retrievers thanks to their balanced character and empathy.

In this ancient profession, dogs have always been linked to the shepherd to help him in his work, their work being essential when it comes to large flocks, generally of sheep and cattle. Herding dogs are responsible for guiding the flock and keeping it together and among their most notable qualities are intelligence and agility, since controlling a stray herd of cattle requires great acuity and courage. There are specific breeds for this work, those known as "herding" (the Border Collie or the Mountain Dog), although others can also easily learn this task and even do it instinctively, from puppies.

It is increasingly common to see these incredible animals helping humans as true professionals, becoming much more than everyday companions. They are therapists and lifesavers who must be loved and cared for!
